Job Description Summary |
Perform semi-skilled work operating a passenger bus or van on assigned routes and/or on a demand-response system in order to safely transport customers to their destinations in a safe and timely manner.

Essential Job Functions |
•Perform routine walk-around inspection on bus before accepting passengers; report any defects to dispatcher on duty and fill out a vehicle defect form.
•Safely operate passenger bus on assigned route, adhering promptly to time schedule. •Safely operate a minibus or van on a demand-response basis with instructions from dispatcher. •Ensure proper fares are deposited, accept proper passes, and issue transfer tickets. •Prepare/record basic reports on money collected, trip deviation, mechanical malfunction of buses and equipment, accidents, incidents, passenger tallies, destinations, and pickups of demand-response system. •Provide directions and information about bus schedules, facilities, and operations. •Maintain order and discipline on bus at all times; respond promptly and appropriately to emergency situations. |
Ancillary Job Functions |
•Operate two-way radio system to communicate with dispatchers and other drivers.
•Respond to public inquiries and complaints. •Provide passenger assistance, including operation of wheelchair lift and securement devices as well as assistance to visually impaired passengers and others with varying disabilities. Assist with boarding/deboarding, transfers from seat to seat, and package handling. •Perform other related duties as assigned. |
Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered |
•High school diploma or equivalent.
•Class B CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements and DOT medical certification. Maintenance of CDL and DOT certification are requirements for continued employment. |

•Considerable knowledge of motor vehicle laws, ordinances, and safe driving practices.
•Knowledge of streets and locations within the City of Columbia. •Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations, to write clearly and legibly, and to prepare basic records and/or reports. •Ability to count money and make change. •Demonstrated mature, responsible attitude in dealing tactfully and congenially with customers. •Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the general public. •Considerable ability to communicate effectively and to follow both oral and written instructions. •Ability to lend assistance to passengers with disabilities, including providing lifting/moving assistance for passengers boarding/deboarding buses. •Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. |

•May be exposed to wet/humid conditions, inclement outdoor weather, vibration, airborne particles/fumes, potentially hazardous bodily fluids, loud noise levels, or moving mechanical parts.
•Frequently required to work in hazardous traffic conditions. •Exposed to moderate noise levels. |

•Must be able to sit, drive, and maneuver long-wheel-based vehicles and small buses/vans for extended periods of time.
•Regularly required to talk and listen. •Must be able to grasp, push, stand, walk, drive, reach with hands/arms, stoop/kneel/crouch/crawl, climb/balance, move up and down from/to sitting position on the floor, and operate mechanical equipment. •Must be able to have repetitive wrist, hand, and/or finger movement. •Must have clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and ability to identify and distinguish colors. •Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. •Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function. |
